The facility lies in Western St. Mary, in the communities of Hunts Town and Wellington.
Background and Purpose:
Hunts Town and Wellington in Western St. Mary are two rural districts in which a small section was served by an inadequate supply of potable (drinkable) water from a small parish council system. However, this system only supplies water during the wet period. During periods of drought, there is little to no water for these areas. Due to this inadequacy, these areas experienced moderate population growth. Therefore, the Government of Jamaica made the decision to create the Hunts Town/Wellington Water Supply Scheme. This supply scheme supplies approximately 1,075 persons with potable water and uses spring flows at Union Hill as the source of the supply scheme. The water from the spring flows is treated and pumped into a service area in order to produce potable water.
Projected Outputs:
The outputs of the project were:
- The construction of a 785 cu.m./day pumping station at Ramble.
- The construction of a chlorine contact tank at Ramble.
- The laying of 150mm, 100mm and 50mm diameter pipes from Union Hill to Wellington to Hunts Town.
- The construction of a 225,000 litres bolted steel tank at Wellington.
Operator of the System:
The National Water Commission is responsible for operating and maintaining the supply scheme.
Status and Cost:
The project was completed at a cost of $3.646 million.
