The facility lies in Central, St. Mary, in the community of Broadgate.
Background and Purpose:
Previously, some of the populace of Broadgate was served by seasonal springs while others were served by the nearby Wag Water River. However, these sources of water were deemed inadequate and as such the Broadgate Water Supply Scheme was designed. The supply scheme provides an adequate supply of potable water for approximately 2,250 persons and provisions were made for a future expansion to serve an additional 650 persons in the areas of Richmond Castle and Margarets Hope. In addition to the future expansion, a steel reservoir was constructed at an elevated site on Mahoe Hill. The source for the Broadgate Water Supply Scheme is a well, drilled specifically for the supply scheme, on the banks of the Wag Water River.
Projected Outputs:
The outputs of the project were:
- The drilling of a well, which yields 37.85 litres per second.
- The laying of a 200mm ductile iron pipe main over a distance of 240 metres.
- The building of a chlorinator house with a pump that has a rate of abstraction of 34.699 litres per second.
- The installation of a 445 cu.m bolted, galvanized, steel reservoir.
- The installation of 1,190m of 200mm P.V.C., 60m of 200mm D.I., 700m of 100mm P.V.C., 900m of 50mm P.V.C. and 1,560m of 50mm galvanized iron distribution pipelines in the Broadgate area.
Operator of the System:
The National Water Commission is responsible for operating and maintaining the supply scheme.
Status and Cost:
The project was completed at a cost of $26.9 million.
