Ballynure, Manchester

            The facility lies in North Western Manchester, approximately twelve miles in the hills above

            Mile Gully, in the community of Ballynure.

      The Ballynure rainwater concrete catchment and tank lies approximately twelve miles in the hills above Mile Gully and was built in the 1950’s by a private land owner as a drinking trough for his cattle. The storage tank in the facility only had a depth of seven and a half feet, which was deemed inadequate for the community’s water needs. The concrete storage tank had a capacity of 134,949.93 litres and the tank as well as the catchment area was found to be in good condition. However, the perimeter fencing was in a state of disrepair, the storage tank was uncovered and there were no extension pipelines in order to supply the neighbouring communities with potable (drinkable) water. The lack of perimeter fencing and coverage for the tank rendered the water unsafe for human consumption as it allowed the water to be contaminated by external forces such as animals, animal excrements, insects and other forces carried by the wind. Therefore, the Government of Jamaica made the decision to conduct repairs on the facility so that the water stored in the facility will be safe for human consumption. The repairs increased the holding capacity of the storage tank which created a reliable and adequate source of potable water and allowed neighbouring communities to receive a portion of this supply. With the combined increase in capacity and the neighbouring communites being able to receive water, the facility is able to serve approximately 1,500 residents.

      The project was completed at a cost of $8.401 million.
