Background and Purpose:
Golden River and Waugh Hill housed an abandoned pump station that could supply 450 cubic metres of water per day. However, there was no chlorination facility to treat the water and as such the water supply at Waugh Hill and Golden River was not suitable for human consumption. Due to this lack of potable (drinkable) water, the Government of Jamaica made the decision to expand the Golden River spring source and refurbish the abandoned pump station in order to supply potable (drinkable) water to the 2,500 residents in the areas.
Projected Outputs:
The outputs of the project were:
- The construction of 2 pumping stations located on abandoned pump station sites at Golden River and Waugh Hill to supply 450 cu.m of water per day.
- The construction of a chlorination facility.
- The incorporation of an existing spring source and welded steel tank at Golden River.
- The development of an augmenting spring source at Golden River.
- The laying of 100mm pipelines.
- The refurbishing of pumping mains between the two pumping stations.
- The installation of 50mm distribution pipelines.
- The refurbishing and incorporation of an existing 30,000 gallon concrete tank at Santa Maria and a 5,000 gallon steel tank at Waugh Hill.
Operator of the System:
The National Water Commission is responsible for operating and maintaining the supply scheme.
Status and Cost:
The project was completed at a cost of $4.955 million.
