The facility lies in West Portland, in the community of Fruitful Vale.
Background and Purpose:
The Fruitful Vale in West Portland is a rural community which was experiencing moderate population growth but generally experienced stagnated economic activities due to insufficient water supply at that time. It was revealed that the availability of potable (drinkable) water could enhance the rate of growth for Fruitful Vale and its. Therefore, the Government of Jamaica made the decision to design the Fruitful Vale Water Supply Scheme.
The previous supply of potable water was from the Scatter Spring which is operated by the National Water Commission. However, this source only supplied the lower elevation with water, the upper elevation was devoid of potable water. Therefore, Warsaw, an existing catchment at Sand Hole Spring, was used as a new water source.
Projected Outputs:
The outputs of the project were:
- The cleaning of the catchment at Warsaw.
- The repairing of 100mm and 75mm pipeline conveying water from the catchment to the main road.
- The construction of a chlorination facility.
- The refurbishing of Dunbar Storage Reservoir.
- The building of inter-connections into the Rock Hall pipeline system.
- The laying of pipes in Chatsworth, Durham, Coopers Hill and Fruitful Vale.
Operator of the System:
The National Water Commission is responsible for operating and maintaining the supply scheme.
Status and Cost:
The project was completed at a cost of $9.175 million.
